How to buy and collect art

03/08/2015

If you are not sure about buying a piece of art or how much is a fair price then keep on reading and hopefully these next 4 tips will help you.

1.  FIND OUT ABOUT THE ARTIST

Printed material from the artist, either in person or online, artist statement, biography, price list or any thing else you can find out about the artist can help influence your decision whether to buy.

2. HOW MUCH DO YOU LOVE THE ART?

How does it affect you on an emotional level. Does it create an emotional response? Is it the piece that takes your interior surroundings to another level.

3. WHAT IS THE ART'S HISTORY AND DOCUMENTATION

Talk to the artist and find out what prompted him to paint it and what it represents. Often finding out an interesting story behind the art can give it a special meaning. Buying art and meeting the artist should be an enjoyable, rewarding experience. If you are buying an original work of art make sure it has a Certificate of Authenticy.

4. PRICING...IS IT FAIR?

If you have any questions regarding price structure just ask. If the artist makes up a price on the spot you may want to find out how. If you truly love the art and can afford it, then buy it. Artists respect this and if they are established will pay you back in unexpected ways. Special invitations to studio events, or by offering you their best new art first. Often what starts out as a single purchase can evolve into a great relationship. If you love the art and don't have the money maybe you can talk to the artist or gallery and buy it over time.

Artists like to stay in touch-- especially with their biggest fans and most dedicated collectors. The inner circle gets perks that other people don't. If you really like a particular artist's art, make sure the artist knows that. Leave your contact information and tell them to keep you in the loop. Good luck and happy buying!
